Talent development is the basis for a university’s growth. Fudan University insists on placing undergraduate education at the forefront of development. The foundation for the school’s current undergraduate program was laid in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the school proposed the ideas of “broad requirements, a wide base, strong capabilities, and a pursuit of innovation.” Continuous reforms have built a program centered on a comprehensive approach, a base in the arts and sciences, and specialized education. At the turn of the millennium, the school presented a plan for reform of arts and sciences education. The plan led to the founding of Fudan College in 2005, and later consideration of all students following the liberal arts model. In 2006, the school led the nation in carrying out independent recruitment reform, in an effort to establish a correspondence between talent recruiting and the liberal arts education process. Under new historical circumstances, the school has again clearly fixed its gaze on the nation and the people’s future, developing leading professional talent with a feel for the arts, a scientific spirit, and an international field of vision.
As a comprehensive university, Fudan now offers 70 undergraduate degree programs in 33 Level I academic disciplines, covering 10 fields of study including literature, philosophy, history, law, economics, management, science, engineering, medicine and arts. Currently Fudan hosts 14,1000 full-time undergraduates and 710 associate degree candidates, among whom there are 12,300 undergraduates and over 1,800 international students from 70 countries and regions. International students take up 14.8% of the total undergraduate population while undergraduates take up 46.3% of total full-time student population.
The undergraduate courses at Fudan University consist of three parts, namely the general education, fundamental of arts and science, and professional education. General education includes core courses, specialized courses and optional courses. Fundamental of arts and science includes seven modules, namely arts, social sciences, economy and management, mathematics, national sciences, technology and medical science, providing the students with introduction to shared knowledge and skills of a variety of fields of study. Specialized courses include compulsory and optional specialized courses. Currently, there are over 3,100 courses and 5650 courses/time included in the undergraduate courses. The average course per student is 0.46 and over 54% of all the classes have less than 30 registered students. Fudan is a leading university with courses taught in English and currently there are over 180 courses/time every year.
The school emphasizes academic innovation and practical teaching at the undergraduate level. Fudan’s undergraduate academic research financial aid platform assists almost 500 students annually in independently pursuing innovative academic research. The school has exchanges with 195 universities abroad, and 40% of the total student body participates in a foreign exchange as undergraduates. The student social practice program supported financially by the school includes more than 400 per year, and the organization 310. In addition, students can also receive the system’s entrepreneurship training and program support.
Fudan College (the undergraduate college) is in charge of planning and managing the whole school’s undergraduate educational program.
Independent Recruitment Reform
In 2002 Fudan ran a pilot of the national independent recruitment reform. Starting in 2006, the Ministry of Education approved a trial of independent recruitment reform in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. Starting in 2010, Fudan University began implementation of the “plan to implement the experimental project for training leading students in core subjects” (or “Wangdao Plan” for short), which is based on the three areas of literature, science, and medicine, encouraging exploration of the talent development model in each area. The plan lays out six platforms: parallel classes for basic courses, exploration of discussion-style classes, foundational specialty classes, research study, academic research subsidy, and international dialogue. The entire school is asked to participate in the undergraduate student’s individualized education.
Fudan's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
Fudan's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (FDUROP) aims to encourage research activities among the undergraduates and includes three projects, namely, Junzheng Fellows Program, Wangdao Fellows Program, Xiyuan Fellows Program. FDUROP offers the students an opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas.
Faculty Development Center
Fudan University Faculty Development Center is an institution that cultivates research-oriented and innovative teaching style, promotes specialization of teaching with higher education institutions, develops cross-disciplinary learning models of teachers and fosters overall management of teaching quality. Fudan Provost takes the position of the Center’s directorship. The regular activities of the Center include faculty development, teaching methodology research and teaching assessment and evaluation. Fudan University Faculty Development Committee and Teaching Supervisors jointly provides intellectual support to the Center.
